(Postponed) A Visit to the Old Hall - Music of Medieval England

The medieval period in England lasted for nearly a thousand years, starting from the end of the 5th century and ending around the start of the Early Modern Period in 1485. The rise of Anglo-Saxons and Christianity, and then the Norman Invasion and finally famine, disease and war provided a rich tapestry of patronage and subject matter for artists of all media. Our program explores this broad milieu from the monophonic plainchant of the early Middle Ages through polyphony influenced by the Ars Nova, and Contenance Angloise, including works found in the Old Hall Manuscript.

Teri Kowiak - voice, hurdy-gurdy, artistic director
Barbara Hill - voice, percussion executive director
Jaya Lakshminarayanan - voice, harp
Dan Meyers - voice, winds, bagpipes, percussion
Ciarán Nagle - voice
Cathy Stein - voice, winds

This concert is offered as part of Early Music America's #EarlyMusicMonth

The Fourth Doctor - Salon Series of Boston

The Salon Series of Boston is an annual series of concerts aimed at building a larger community with the contemplation of great art at its center.

The ladies of Meravelha, in celebration of the naming of Hildegard von Bingen as the fourth female doctor of the church, perform her music and readings from her prose. Poet, composer, mystic, theologian, medicine woman and expert cookie baker, Hildegard was a “Renaissance” woman before such a term even existed!

The Lionheart - with Peter Walker (SoHIP Summer Concert Series)

Meravelha teams up with Peter Walker for a brand new program. The Lionheart will be a program of medieval French songs chosen from the troubadour and trouvère repertoires that together tell a story of the life of Richard I. Despite (or perhaps because of) his great historical status, portrayals of King Richard I in the modern era tend to place him in the background as a sort of Deus ex machina figure who rides in to change the tide of an ongoing story (e.g., pardoning Robin Hood). Our program The Lionheart seeks to remedy this by telling the stories of this King’s own greatest adventures. The performance will include unaccompanied vocal pieces, original arrangements of monody with instrumental accompaniment, and instrumental pieces on harp, vielle, winds, hurdy-gurdy, citole and percussion.
